ESG

As a central player within the construction and civil engineering industry the Group takes responsibility for contributing to a sustainable development.

In collaboration with our customers and partners we wish to be known and recognized for sustainable solutions in the entire building life cycle from design and choice of materials to the operation and reutilization.

MT Højgaard Holding’s sustainability strategy forms the framework for the Group’s sustainability work. The strategy encompasses both social and environmental sustainability and is underpinned by collaboration and certification. We prepared the strategy at the end of 2020, and we continue to work on a number of initiatives under each strategic focus area and have set targets for how we will create sustainable results, both at Group level and in the business units.

The five strategic sustainability themes are:

  • Local and social responsibility
  • Health and learning
  • Climate and environment
  • Circular economy
  • Collaboration and certification

Local and social responsibility

MT Højgaard Holding enhances social responsibility in the entire supply chain and develops local communities. The Group reaches out to local communities with offers for employment of unemployed residents on housing refurbishment, integration of young people in wage subsidy jobs and establishment of internships.

The Group wants to maintain a diverse workplace in which women and men have equal opportunities for employment and everyone feels included.

Health and learning

Working conditions must be in order with a healthy and safe working environment. All of the Group’s companies focus on preventing occupational injuries and wear in the entire value chain. Negligent conduct that can endanger the health and safety of others is not tolerated.

Climate and environment

The Group’s projects take part in reducing the impact on the environment and the climate and contributes to the preservation of biodiversity. The effort takes place through the entire lifecycle of the project from selection of sustainable materials to the operational phase, disposal, recycling and reutilisation.

The Group uses a wide range of certifications and labelling systems for example DGNB, The Nordic Swan Ecolabel, LEED and BREEAM which gives clients, owners and renters security that the projects live up to measurable standards within environment, economy and social aspects.

The Group’s ambition is to live up to the Danish national climate goal to reduce CO2 emissions with 70% by 2030.

Circular economy

One of the most important challenges of the construction and civil engineering industry is to ensure circular projects that consider the sustainability in the entire life cycle already in the planning and design phase. The Group’s companies emphasise the use of materials with a low energy and resource consumption and the optimisation of material use by using recycled materials and designing solutions that can be taken apart and reused.

The Group prioritizes to participate in projects focusing on circular economy and leads the way in the development of wood construction. The Group is continuously strengthening the effort by increasing the use of recycled materials, reducing waste and using lasting materials and solutions with a long lifetime.

Collaboration and certification

Certifications play a key role in the MT Højgaard Holding Group’s work on the green transition, as they formulate sustainability and provide a framework for a constructive collaboration process from start to finish. The Group offers its customers sustainability certification and often uses the sustainability certification DGNB on construction projects developed in-house by the Group. The Group’s modular buildings are certified with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel as standard.

Further, we collaborate with relevant players on finding solutions to sustainability challenges across the value chain, where especially projects with educational institutions and foundations are in focus.

Reporting

The Group´s reports on access, policies, efforts, objectives and action plans in an annual sustainability report, which forms part of the Group's annual reporting and constitutes the statutory statements of social responsibility, see section 99(a) of the Danish Financial Statements Act, its report on the gender composition of governance bodies, see section 99(b) of the Danish Financial Statements Act, and its report on the diversity of governance bodies, see section 107(d) of the Danish Financial Statements Act. The sustainability report also serves as the Group’s reporting in relation to the EU Taxonomy Regulation requirements on reporting of the taxonomy-eligible share of revenue, CAPEX and OPEX.

In addition, the sustainability report also documents compliance with the UN’s 10 principles on sustainable behaviour and the requirements in the UN’s Global Compact, which MT Højgaard Holding joined in 2015.

Responsible Construction

MT Højgaard Holding has joined the Association for Responsible Construction’s charter for social responsibility in the real estate, construction and civil engineering industry in Denmark.

The Charter is a common standard of social responsibility that can open up dialogue on how to create value and promote productivity in the field. The charter is tailored to the construction and civil engineering industry and brings together common interests, which form the basis for action.
